Dobson Roofing: Built for Yadkin Valley Weather, Not Just Any Weather

From the courthouse square to the vineyard rows off Cabernet Lane, Arthur's Roofing has been fixing and replacing Surry County roofs since 1992. Call (336) 565-5585 for a free, honest estimate.

A County Seat That Never Stopped Growing

Dobson became Surry County's seat in 1853, after the legislature carved Yadkin County out of the southern half of the old district and left Rockford stranded on the wrong side of the river. The courthouse square filled in around that decision, and it's been the civic center of the county ever since — the current courthouse dates to 1916, expanded in 1971, with grounds that still carry markers for Stoneman's Raid and Tabitha Holton, the first woman licensed to practice law in North Carolina.

Arthur's Roofing works on turn-of-the-century homes near that square, mid-century ranch houses on the roads leading out of town, and newer construction pushing toward the Yadkin River — each with its own roofing quirks, none getting a cookie-cutter estimate.

The Vineyard Effect

Dobson's other defining feature is Shelton Vineyards — a 406-acre estate with roughly 200 acres of planted vines and a 33,000-square-foot winery building, founded in 1994 by brothers Charlie and Ed Shelton. It's the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina, and it's turned this stretch of Surry County into a real wine-tourism draw, which means more event barns and tasting-room outbuildings needing roofs that hold up to both weather and public use — not just normal residential wear.

What Actually Wears Out a Roof Around Here

The Fisher River Bottomland Problem

Low-lying properties near the Fisher River deal with heavier ground moisture and morning fog than homes up on the ridges toward town. That moisture works into attic spaces when soffit and ridge venting isn't sized correctly, showing up as granule loss, curling shingles, or mold on the decking long before the shingles are actually worn out. We check attic airflow on every inspection — see our roof ventilation systems page for how that works.

Foothill Transition Wind and Ice

Dobson sits where the Piedmont starts climbing into the Blue Ridge foothills, so roofs here catch both the straight-line summer wind events common across the Triad and occasional hard winter freezes that don't reach areas further south as often. Wind pulls shingle edges loose or strips sections outright; ice damming at the eaves forces meltwater back up under the shingle line. Both are on the checklist during storm inspections here.

Valleys, Flashing, and the Slow Leak Nobody Notices

Whether it's a farmhouse roofline with multiple valleys or a courthouse-area home with an aging chimney, flashing and valley failures are where we find the most hidden leaks — the kind that sit in an attic for months before a stain shows up on a ceiling. Our valley repair and chimney flashing repair work targets exactly these points.

Where We Work

Arthur's Roofing covers Dobson Township and the Surry County area around it — in-town properties near the courthouse and Dobson Square, rural roads and farmland stretching toward the Yadkin and Fisher Rivers, and the vineyard corridor around Shelton Vineyards. Historic homes, newer builds, farm structures, and light commercial properties all fall inside our normal service area, and our crews already know the permitting and code expectations specific to this county.

The Work Itself

Replacement and repair. We install GAF Timberline HDZ and the CertainTeed Landmark, Landmark PRO, and Belmont lines, chosen for how they hold up under this region's humidity swings. Details on our roof replacement and roof repair pages.

Storm and emergency response. Our storm damage roof repair and hail damage roof inspection teams document damage properly, and our emergency roof repair crew responds fast when a roof can't wait.

Water management. Gutter cleaning and installation and roof leak detection — drainage that actually moves water away from the structure.

Metal roofing. Farm buildings, event barns, and owners wanting a longer-lived system often go with our metal roofing installs and metal roof repair work.

Why Dobson Calls Arthur's Roofing

We've worked the Piedmont Triad since 1992, and Surry County's terrain — river bottomland, foothill wind, older housing stock around the square — gets treated as its own case, not a smaller version of a Greensboro job. We tell you what the roof needs, quote it straight, and stand behind the work.
