Boonville sits about three miles south of the Yadkin River, at the spot where, according to local history, Daniel Boone camped near a spring on his hunting trips through the area in the late 1760s. The town wasn't formally incorporated until 1895, but the name stuck long before that, and today a Daniel Boone memorial marker stands at the intersection of US 601 and NC 67 downtown, placed by the Boonville Tar Heel Junior Historians in the 1970s.

That history matters less to us than what it produced: a town built around farmland, wide-open lots, and a housing mix that looks nothing like a Greensboro subdivision.
