A Small Stanly County Town With a Real Story
New London is a small town of a few hundred residents tucked between Albemarle and Richfield along US-52 in Stanly County. It started out as Bilesville, an 1830s settlement named for landowner Thomas "Uncle Tommy" Biles, and grew up around a gold mine discovered on the Howell Parker farm in 1859. When an English mining company bought the property in the 1870s and reopened it, the town took the name New London after the firm and incorporated in 1891. The Parker Mine itself ran on and off into the 1930s before shutting down for good. It's a quieter piece of local history than most people expect from a town this size — and in 1923, New London also elected Mrs. T.V. Staton as mayor, making her the first woman to hold municipal office anywhere in North Carolina.
Arthur's Roofing has been a family-owned roofing contractor in the Piedmont Triad since 1992, and we serve New London and the rest of Stanly County with the same straightforward, no-pressure approach we bring to every job: an honest look at the roof, a clear explanation of what it needs, and quality work whether that's a small repair or a full replacement.
Roofing Challenges Around New London
Older homes near the original mine property. A handful of houses in and around New London sit on or near ground disturbed by the old Parker Mine workings from the 1800s and early 1900s. On these lots we sometimes see more foundation movement over time than you'd find on an undisturbed building site, and that settling can telegraph up into roof lines, ridge sag, and flashing that no longer sits flush. We check these details closely rather than assuming a roof problem is purely weather-related.
Storm exposure typical of central Stanly County. New London sits in the path of the same severe thunderstorm and straight-line wind activity that moves through the central Piedmont most summers. Older homes in town, some approaching or past the century mark, were often built and re-roofed over the years without modern wind-rated fastening, which leaves them more exposed when a strong storm rolls through.
Tree cover and shaded, humid rooflines. Much of New London sits along wooded, rolling farmland rather than open subdivision lots. Roofs shaded by mature hardwoods hold moisture longer after rain, which speeds up algae staining and moss growth compared to a roof with full sun exposure.
Serving New London and Rural Stanly County
New London itself is small — a short stretch of US-52 with a town hall, a handful of churches, and homes spreading out along the county roads in every direction. Arthur's Roofing covers that in-town core as well as the farms and rural properties on the way to Albemarle to the south, Richfield to the north, and Badin to the east. Our crews are just as comfortable estimating a modest in-town ranch house as they are working a metal roof on an outbuilding a few miles down a gravel road.
Because New London isn't big enough to support its own large roofing companies, most homeowners here end up calling a contractor based in Albemarle, Salisbury, or further into the Triad. Arthur's Roofing treats New London jobs the same as any other stop on our route — full attention, straight answers, and no "small town, small effort" shortcuts.

Why New London Chooses Arthur's Roofing
New London is small enough that a roofing job here doesn't get the volume attention a bigger city gets from most contractors. We don't treat it that way. Arthur's Roofing has been doing residential roofing across the Piedmont Triad since 1992, and every New London roof gets the same detailed inspection, honest recommendation, and quality installation as a job in Greensboro or Winston-Salem — just with the added benefit of a crew that understands what makes this town's older housing stock a little different.
